My mountain

Do you already know our new mountain hike?

Highlights are the view over the Jandia nature reserve, the small chapel of El Tanquito and the spring on the slope of the holy mountain El Cardon. Hardly anyone knows that there is a holy mountain in the south of Fuerteventura.

From the main road that leads from La Pared towards Pajara, El Cardon mountain can be seen clearly rising above the otherwise flat mountains. This deserted area is a huge nature reserve. The first settlers had already discovered the 695 m high peak for themselves. Water is filtered by the stone wall and emerges from the rock 460 m above sea level.

In the past, these places were considered sacred, since the life of humans and animals was secured thanks to the spring. This is proven by the numerous bone finds from the area, which now provide information about life long before the island was conquered.

Impressive is the view to the southern tip of Punta Jandia and the magnificent view over the little-known hinterland. On a clear day, the southern peninsula of Jandia is wonderful to see.

icon chapel

The destination of the hike is the chapel of the Virgin El Tanquito after a 1 hour walk. (460 m over sea)
The small ermitage, carved into the middle of the volcanic rock will surprise you. Every year in early June, the procession of the Virgin is organized here and hundreds of locals celebrate their saint with a big barbecue and wine.

On all other days of the year hardly anyone uses the hiking trail, which is why this tour is still an insider tip for those looking for peace and quiet. Especially in the autumn and winter months, plants can be discovered on the El Cardon mountain, which are supplied with moisture by the clouds from the trade winds and offer unique contrasts.

You cannot reach the top on this guided hike, as the last few meters are made of heavily weathered ground and there is no path.

Let your guide tell you the stories of this fascinating place and discover the beauty of the Sacred Mount El Cardon.

Visit the interesting chapel and enjoy a picnic in a small group of max 8 people.

icon locationPick up and meeting point

We can organize pick-up in front of the hotel in the south of the island.
Please note that we do not offer pick-up in the north as the transfer starts in the south.
If you have a rental car and are coming yourself, please arrange the meeting point by email or WhatsApp.

icon familyWho is the tour suitable for?

The tour is suitable for participants aged 9 - 75 years. You don't need to have any off-road experience. A normal level of physical fitness is required, as there is a hiking trail that goes up and down again.
Sturdy, closed shoes with a profile are important, as the ground is gravel.

icon info 01GOOD TO KNOW

Fuerteventura is a sunny island with warm weather all year round. Sun protection and a hat are important for all participants. Especially with children, a scarf or hat should be considered, because Fuerteventura is known for its wind. Closed shoes with good soles are a prerequisite for our tour.
